ALLISTON HORNETS ROUGH START

We may have over estimated the Hornets chances this season in our Jr C preview post earlier this month.

At the preseason tournament in Alliston they looked somewhat disorganized, but had a lot of talent on the ice.  We chalked that up to Sandy McArthy getting his feet wet in the Jr ranks.  But after a third period implosion in their home opener against Stayner handing them the win, a lackluster game against basement dwellers Fergus and a romping by Penatang this past Sunday night….we may have to admit our mistake.

Penatang played a strong game and were up 6-1 in the 2nd period on numerous Alliston miscues and penalties.  Goaltender Rob Alsop was pulled after 3 goals on 9 shots.  He’s been off his game since the end of last season.  But backup Odreieve faired no better giving up 6 on 32 shots.  While we love to blame goalies, many of these shots were off complete defencive breakdowns and these guys shouldnt carry the burden of this games results.

Coach McArthy is going to have to get a handle on things fast because right now there are too many issues in their play.  Defencively the forwards are weak on the backcheck and in zone coverage, the defence has terrible net front coverage and overall the team seems to lack any offensive structure to their game.  Most time you cant tell what forecheck or PP they are trying to run.

Alliston handed the Kings 12 powerplay opportunities on the night, and they converted on 3 of them.  For the Hornets it was Campeu and Cox showing the most effort, while for the Kings Robittaile, Meeks and Leduc were strong all night…..and again defenceman Hayden Cole showed he’s bound for at least Jr A with his play very soon.

Look for Alliston this Thur night in Stayner to try and fix things, otherwise because Alliston management wont put up with a few more losses.
